Herald House and the Toodyay Herald Newspaper History.

Herald House at 72 Stirling Terrace was built in 1920.

In 1923 it was purchased by Edgar Turley who had purchased The Toodyay Herald newspaper in 1921. Turley and his wife named their new home ‘Herald House’. At the time the house was described as newly built and one of the most ‘up to date’ houses in Toodyay (telephone number Toodyay 11).

Edgar Turley trained as a printer and his first position was at Cue-Day Dawn.

World War 1 service records list his profession as printer, single, age 26, son of William Turley.

Edgar Turley served overseas as a sapper in the 5th Field Co. Engineers and was made responsible for printing and editing The Digger – a journal that informed and entertained Australian Field Engineers abroad during the Great War.

He returned after the war to edit city and country newspapers and journals before moving to Toodyay to become proprietor and editor of The Toodyay Herald.

Edgar Turley sold The Toodyay Herald to United Press Ltd in July 1926 and moved to Wyalkatchem where he, together with A. E. Deacon who also edited and managed The Toodyay Herald for two years from 1924, published and printed Wyalkatchem’s first local newspaper in August 1926.

Edgar Turley expanded production at Wyalkatchem to newspapers serving the Dampier and Dowerin areas of the north-eastern Wheatbelt, including The Dowerin Guardian and Amery Line Advocate, Dampier Herald, Koorda Record and Nungarin Standard.

Turley retained ownership of Herald House in Toodyay until it was sold to the War Services Homes Commission in 1931 and later it sold in 1947 to Mrs Esther Donegan.

The Ayling Family purchased Herald House in 1951 and lived there until 1967 when the property was still called Herald House. Sometime after the 1970’s the house name plate was lost. With the assistance of the Toodyay Historical Society, which undertook the research, the original name of the house was confirmed along with it’s link to the Herald Newspaper.

Margaret Pember (nee Ayling) recently revisited the house and recalled that `Of all the Toodyay homes she lived in, the one she remembers best is Herald House, and it was a happy home’….. as it is today.
