According to the Mildura Development Corporation, Mildura is Victoria’s premier solar location, which will spearhead the region’s growth in the future. As the major centre of the region, Mildura has a number of facilities readily available to its residents.
There are numerous childcare, primary, and secondary institutions in and around the area, as well as a regional campus of the La Trobe University and the main campus of Sunraysia Institute of TAFE.
While there is a golf course and a large sporting complex with extensive facilities in the suburb itself, the nearby Murray River also provides many activities for recreation and tourism.
There are various stores in and around the Mildura Centre Plaza and the northern commercial district of the suburb. Mildura also has a public and private hospital.
Industry and Employment in Mildura
As the suburb is situated in the centre of the Sunraysia irrigation area, Mildura’s main industries include crop farming, fruit and vegetable growing, and breweries and wineries. Many residents work in production companies such as Mildura Fruit Company Ltd, Sunbeam Foods, and McGuigan Simeon Wines.
Residents can also find local employment opportunities in the retail, tourism, and health industries. The $100 million government funded TRUenergy Solar Park is set to bring more jobs to the area, which is set to begin construction in 2015 should it be approved.

Mildura’s resident population has growth significantly since the last Census in 2006, when it was around 28,600. It is now estimated that Mildura is home to over 38,000 residents.
The predominant age group is families with young children. Around 25 per cent of households are couples with children, a similar number are couples with no children and 30 per cent are single parent households.
