How To Transform Your Bathroom On a Budget

October 10, 2016

If your bathroom is looking a bit tired and drab but you don’t quite have the funds for a full bathroom renovation, there are lots of small updates you can make that will totally transform your space without breaking the bank.

Try out some of these tips to see how a little really can go a long way when updating your bathroom.

Give it a good clean

A proper clean can do wonders in making your bathroom look fresher and brighter and it’s a great first step if you plan on making some cosmetic updates.

Clean the tiles, grout, soap holders, around the taps and behind the toilet, and get any mirrors and glass streak free and sparkling.

Declutter and reinvent your bathroom storage

Throw away anything you don’t use that is taking up space in your bathroom. Clear out bottles you don’t need in the shower, organise your drawers and try to leave surfaces clutter free.

And if you don’t have the cabinet space to place things out of sight, get creative!

You could repurpose some old wooden crates to make a rustic storage unit, install some floating shelves if you have a bare wall or buy some nice baskets and pretty containers to store your belongings in an orderly and chic style.

Get painting

Giving walls a fresh lick of paint is one of the easiest ways to transform a space.

A fresh white colour palette will make your bathroom look larger and brighter, while adding a pop of your favourite colour is a sure way to liven up a room and give it a completely different look.

If you’re worried about going off colour scheme from the rest of your house, bathrooms are generally more forgiving of this than high traffic living areas are.

Make a statement with wallpaper

While more commonly used in other parts of the house, wallpaper is a relatively cheap way to try out a new and unexpected look in your bathroom.

And if you tire of it in a few years’ time, you can easily replace it with a new design!

Inject some colour and personality

There are lots of cheap and non-permanent ways to showcase your personality and transform your space.

Buy some new towels and bathmats in your favourite colour, invest in some new soap dispensers and toothbrush holders, add a colourful new shower curtain or update your window coverings.

Accessorise your bathroom hardware

An easy and non-permanent way to bring some character and individuality to your bathroom is to update hardware such as door and cupboard handles, taps, faucets, light fittings, towel rails and robe hooks.

Add a plant to your bathroom

Bring some life, texture and greenery into your bathroom by adding a hardy indoor plant.

If flowers are more your thing you could add a small vase of blooms to your vanity for an instant pick-me-up.

Invest in a bathtub tray

Practical, stylish and indulgent. Not only is the addition of a bath tray a simple way to update your space, it will transform the way you use your bathroom too.

Update your mirror

If your mirror is old with chips and marks on it, a new mirror will work wonders in modernising your bathroom, or if you currently have no mirrors, the addition of one will create the illusion of more space and light.

Alternatively, if your current mirror is still in good knick, you could simply try reframing it for a new look.

Get craft with a new vanity

A bit more of a complex task but possible for those into DIY, a new vanity is a change you will definitely notice.

You could even try upcycling an old dresser or shelving unit to save yourself some extra cash and add a dash of uniqueness.

Tile transformation

Some new tiling will totally transform a bathroom, even if you don’t touch anything else.

If you can’t afford to tile the whole room you could consider adding a tile feature such as a border above the vanity or a tiled wall behind the bathtub.

Switch out the showerhead

Turn your bathroom into a home spa by replacing your old showerhead with a large, rain-style showerhead.

Light it up

Drab and dated light fittings can easily be replaced with something more modern; chandeliers are becoming increasingly popular in bathrooms for a touch of luxe.

For a simple fix that delivers a huge impact, try replacing the bulbs you use.

Replace florescent or yellow bulbs with softer lighting that simulates natural light as much as possible.

Add some touches of luxury

It’s easy to make your home feel like a plush hotel by laying out some folded, fluffy white towels, displaying an indulgent hand cream or having a lush, scented soap by the sink.

Replace old shower screens

Old, frosted or coloured glass shower screens can really date a bathroom.

Replacing old screens with clean and modern glass shower screens will transform your shower, modernise the space and open your bathroom right up.
