Your Christmas Table – This Year’s Latest Trends

December 11, 2018

If you’re planning a Christmas feast at your house this year, the dining table needs to be as on point as your menu. We’ve provided some inspiration to help you decorate for the festive season.

Black magic

Black magic

Don’t be afraid of the dark… Black has been a big interiors trend in 2018 and it can bring real drama to a Christmas table.

Rather than a tablecloth, which would darken things down too much, use black runners or place mats on a natural table top.

Add highlights of gold with candleholders and painted pinecones. The odd branch of eucalyptus also adds a classic Aussie touch – just keep it clear of any candle flames.

Coastal vibes

Nothing says an Australian Christmas more than a coastal themed table.

Get that cool Hamptons inspired look by layering different textures – try rattan place mats, crisp linens and pops of fresh greenery.

Stick to a soft palette of cool coastal colours of whites and blues and bring out your good crystal and candles.

Festively floral

A floral-inspired theme may not seem like the most obvious Christmas choice, but it is definitely a trend with huge impact this year.

Try a gorgeous and airy table setting that draws on pinks, golds and peonies using Christmas ornaments and faux flowers to finish the look.

If you don’t have any ornate goblets, head to a thrift store and bag yourself a tableware bargain in time for Christmas lunch.

Modern metallics

Mixing metals is completely on trend at the moment. You can add silver, platinum, gold, bronze, copper or a mix – a little goes a long way.

Give your decor a sophisticated look by incorporating metallic details in your placemats and plateware. Even gold-trimmed glasses or plates add wow to your table.

Rustic and romantic

Enjoy a simpler style of dining. Natural materials are tactile and lovely to look at.

Uncover wooden tabletops, bring in serving boards and marble trivets, add clear or smoked glass and accessorise with rustic linen napkins.

Bring in greenery from outside to dress your table. Eat by candlelight. Your visitors will be wowed.

Go disposable

There’s nothing worse than having an incredible Christmas lunch or dinner with your family and friends and then having to clean a bunch of dirty dishes.

Instead, enjoy the atmosphere and don’t give washing up a second thought. Disposable can be acceptable if you choose to use recyclable products available from your local supermarket.

Mixing and matching

Build dimension into your Christmas table decorations by using varying jars and vases.

The size variation helps to create a visually appealing spread. Mix and match your shapes by including pieces like circular jars and taller stemmed vases.

Wreath centrepieces

When it comes to table centrepieces, something that is very popular at the moment is using a wreath in the centre of the table and putting something in the centre as a focal point.

This could be a candle, a mini Christmas tree or a small standing decoration. So instead of hanging a wreath on your door, use it as the base of a centrepiece for your Christmas table instead.

Go colour crazy

You have permission to break up with the traditional red and green this year and unleash your colour creative.

Anchor your look with a white tablecloth and build your palette using colourful glasses, napkins and plateware.

Raid your Christmas tree and sprinkle bright decorations throughout your table centre.

It’s all about layering and adding texture

Instead of sticking to the usual set up, why not experiment with different textures and layering different items to create a warm and inviting effect?

Scrap the simple Christmas table decorations and table cover and add a hessian/bamboo table runner with a beautiful pine garland on top.

You can even add some fairy lights down the centre if you’re feeling extra festive.
