Creating a nursery
Getting overwhelmed when trying to put together a baby nursery is not as uncommon as you may think. Some parents prioritise aesthetic, others necessity, and some people find that a crib and a blanket should suffice.
Whether you are a minimalist or a maximalist, creating a nursery is never as easy as it may seem. This is why it is important to make yourself a baby room checklist for optimal results.
Your tot is relying on you to create the room that they go to sleep and wake up in every day. Although only a few things are generally necessary for a nursery, it is important to consider what you think would be best for your baby.
When all is said and done, though, the essentials are undeniable. A baby room checklist should always consist of a few, necessary nursery items.
What do you need in a nursery?
What should be in a newborn’s room? What are essential things you need for a newborn baby? What do you need in a nursery?!
These are all valid, common questions that most new parents have to ask themselves. Your baby’s needs are not to be played around with.
Luckily, your nursery setup can get by with fairly few items. Things for sleeping, feeding, diapering, storage, playing, and staying safe are the categories you should be considering.
Nursery essentials
The question of what should you not put in a baby’s room is just as important as what you should put in a newborn nursery.
Anything that could endanger the baby is a no-go. This includes items such as pillows, quilts, stuffed animals, comforters, and anything else that is soft should not be placed inside of the crib because of the risk of suffocation.
Hanging a mobile above your baby’s crib can be cute, but you have to make sure that it is secured and not going anywhere anytime soon.
A common question is can you put a crib against a wall? In short, the answer is no. Try putting the crib at least one foot from any furniture or walls for optimal safety.
Now that we’ve gone through the no-no’s, time for the nursery essentials.
Cot or bassinet
Your baby’s nursery room needs to have some sort of cot or bassinet with a suitable mattress. Although it may seem obvious, this is one of the more important items on your baby room checklist.
The cot vs bassinet debate is prevalent amongst parents but remember to prioritise what works best for your family. It won’t be the same for everyone. Researching the risks of SIDS to reduce them in your baby’s room can also help determining what to put on your baby room checklist.
Appropriate bedding
Another investment on your baby room checklist should be bedding. You don’t want to do the bare minimum here seeing as this is where your child will be sleeping for the majority of their infant life.
Since babies are prone to having lots of accidents, have multiple sheets on hand in case of a necessary change. If your baby is having multiple accidents a day, it is normal, therefore, you should be prepared.
Chest
Having a chest in the nursery can save you the hassle of having to navigate between rooms for your baby’s clothing. Having a chest full of drawers can help with this.
Drawers will also come in handy when you need to store nappies, bibs, and the other essential items that you won’t want just laying around.
Changing mat
A changing mat is more of a gift for the parents than anything. It makes changing the baby a lot easier and faster.
You can also double the chest as a changing table but be aware of the risks involved.
Pram
Having a pram handy in your baby’s nursery can save you a whole lot of storage trouble. It can be kept out of the way of other rooms in the house and add to the aesthetic of the nursery.
Nappies, of course
Babies are known for crying and making accidents, which is why a closet full of nappies is as essential as it gets. Having an ample number of nappies and wipes already in the baby’s nursery is convenient and makes things easier.
Most new parents are never prepared for the onslaught of nappies they need to have around the house, so storing them in one place is helpful.
Decor
Although it may not exactly be essential, having a nice decor for a nursery can be a gift for the parents. In a room where all you do is take care of a crying, hungry baby, it would be nice to have a soothing atmosphere.
Extra things to buy for your nursery
Some other items many parents buy for their baby’s nurseries include toys to stimulate the baby’s brain, a nappy bin for convenience, a rocking chair for feeding, and a baby bath.
