When it comes to homes, there are many features that are pretty common the world over.
But when it comes to the houses in our own fair land, some of the things you’ll find are quintessentially Australian.
In honour of Australia Day, we take a look at some of the things you’re bound to find in a true blue Aussie home, from a hills hoist to a tin of milo in the kitchen and a backyard slip n’ slide.
How many of these do you have in your home?
A barbeque
Are you even Australian if you don’t have a BBQ at home?
Whether it’s a birthday, Australia Day, a catch up with mates or a casual Tuesday night, a good old BBQ has you covered for any occasion, and you can’t get much more Australian than that.
Throw on some snags, patties, onion, chicken skewers and steaks and you’re all set.
The backyard
While not all of us are lucky to have our own big backyard (hello, apartment living) a house with a lush backyard is surely the Australia dream.
Not just a patch of grass or plants, for us Australians the humble backyard is the setting for countless games of backyard cricket, hours spent playing a kid, the joy of running through the sprinkler and drying out the washing on the hills hoist.
Bonus points if you have a sloped backyard and a slip n’ slide.
A swimming pool
If you’re lucky enough to have a pool in your backyard you’re pretty much living the Australian dream.
It’s a sought after feature for many Aussies when the weather is nudging 40 and the last thing you want to do is leave your home to head to the beach or pool to cool down.
It also saves you the pain of sand burn to the feet, a real Australian problem.
Air conditioning
Air conditioning is pretty much essential in a country where the temperature can be over 40 degrees in summer, but also surprisingly cool in winter.
If you don’t have air conditioning in your home, guaranteed you have a friend who does. If not, there’s always the shops.
Entertaining area
Integrated indoor outdoor living is becoming increasingly popular in Australian homes and why wouldn’t you want to entertain outside when you live in a climate like this?
Whether it’s a timber patio, a paved courtyard or a little table set up on your balcony, an outdoor entertaining area is a common fixture in most Australian homes.
Mozzie repellent
If you’re going to be entertaining outside, you’re going to need some insect repellent to keep those mozzies at bay.
You can almost guarantee you can find insect repellent in the home of every Australian.
The pool room
“This is going straight to the pool room!”
It’s an iconic line from one of our most iconic Aussie films, The Castle.
And you know you’re in the presence of a true Aussie if they have a pool room in their home, and actually call it a pool room.
Do you know a male who says he wouldn’t actually want a pool room in his home? Tell him he’s dreaming!
A beer fridge
A fridge dedicated solely to beer and beverages…It’s Australian, it’s genius and it’s self-explanatory.
The kitchen essentials
In any true blue Aussie home you’re bound to find at least one of these staple items in the kitchen – a jar of vegemite, a tin of milo, a box of Weet-Bix or a packet of Tim Tams.
