Coolangatta is located along the Gold Coast and is the most southern city, sharing the Queensland and New South Wales border along with Tweed Heads. This suburb is home to one of the best surfing breaks in the world and definitely the best surfing break along the Gold Coast.

Referred to by locals as ‘Cooly’, Coolangatta has developed from a small beachside town into a vibrant business, holiday, and shopping location. The relaxed, cheerful atmosphere of the city contrasts the glitzy lifestyle of its northern counterparts. Similar to the majority of southern Gold Coast suburbs, Coolangatta is a tranquil, easygoing city to live in.

Coolangatta is the perfect place to raise a family, which is why so much of the population is made up of families. 54.5% of people in this suburb are males while 45.5% are females. The median age of a Coolangatta resident is 45 years old, and 90% of the residents are families. On average, there are two children per family, and the majority of accommodations are homes.
Most of the population is made up of children from ages 5-19 and adults from 35-64. As a small, peaceful suburb, it is expected that so many families gravitate to such a great place to grow up and spend time with loved ones.

There is a public tram system, Translink, that runs smoothly but cannot be depended on all the time according to the locals. Many people also resort to getting around by bicycle or on foot. This is made easy due to the densely developed areas.
Proximity to Surfers Paradise Hotspots
Surfers Paradise, Queensland is the nearest big suburb to Coolangatta and is also deemed a popular tourist attraction because of its many attractions. The most convenient way to get to Surfers Paradise from Coolangatta is to drive straight south for 24 minutes.
You can also spend 50-60 minutes on the bus to get to Surfer Paradise’s Sea World or Skypoint Observation Deck, two central landmarks in the area.

Whether you require an eye care clinic, a chiropractor, or a general doctor, Coolangatta has all the necessary health services. The Coolangatta Medical Centre is especially popular amongst locals as the go-to place when searching for anything health-related.
Because the suburb is filled with families, Coolangatta’s doctors are experts in treating all people of all ages. The suburb’s medical services are notable.
Shopping in Coolangatta
Although it is a quaint suburb, the shopping in Coolangatta is undeniable. The Tweed Mall Shopping Centre features a variety of top-name fashion stores along with a 350-seat food court, electronics, homewares, and much more. It is located in the center of the Coolangatta-Tweed commercial district.
Throughout the suburb, though, you can find anything you need at The Strand. It is home to the best beachside entertainment, dining, and shopping. The Strand is located in the heart of Coolangatta and is a treasured area for locals.

There are a variety of Coolangatta schools to choose from once you have set up your Coolangatta accommodation. For primary school, kids have the option of going to Coolangatta Preschool, Coolangatta State Primary School, Coolangatta Special School, and Greenmount State Primary School.
State high schools for the children include Tweed River High School and Palm Beach Currumbin High School. If none of these options sound appealing enough, you can also choose to enroll your child into one of the three private schools: Lindisfarne Anglican School, St. Joseph’s Catholic College, or Lakeside Christian College.
There is even a tertiary school called Southern Cross University Tweed Heads.

Coolangatta is home to huge events and festivals, like Summer Salt and Cooly Rocks which is why there is public parking scattered around the suburb. If you are planning a day trip, though, it is recommended to leave your car in your home’s garage and navigate the town by public transportation or foot.
